Valerie D. Maidment is an author and advocate for the blind and visually impaired whose work is grounded in lived experience. In 2008, she lost her vision—but rather than stepping back, she stepped up, choosing to remain actively involved in her community and committed to raising awareness about accessibility challenges. Through her writing and advocacy, Valerie seeks to shine a light on the daily struggles that many people with vision loss encounter, and to inspire conversations that lead to real, lasting change.
A proud member of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), Valerie uses her voice to educate the public about the need for inclusive spaces—especially in workplaces, public services, and community life. Her debut book, From Daylight to Dark, captures both the emotional and practical dimensions of navigating vision loss and aims to support others on similar journeys. Valerie’s passion for lifelong learning fuels many of her interests. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, knitting, and discovering new skills. One of her greatest joys is riding the ATV through the Newfoundland countryside with her husband. She currently lives in Lower Island Cove, Newfoundland, with her husband and sister-in-law. |
